Bill K6KN demonstrated contacts over amateur earth satellite AO-51 using the simplest of equipment: a Yaesu VX-5R HT and a hand-held Arrow II antenna on 2 meters (up) and 70 cm (down). With just 5 watts up and 1 watt down reliable contacts can be made from Arkansas to Hawaii, Mexico to Canada. Path lengths are often 1,500 miles.
