EMCOMMWEST 2012 - 4-6 May 2012

EMCOMM (EMergency COMMunications) has been a vital part of all the emergency and disaster operations since the invention of the radio. It plays a very important part in getting messages to the appropriate people and places when all other modes of communication have failed. Symposiums like EMCOMMWEST provide a forum where EMCOMM served agency people have an opportunity to become familiar with the capabilities of Amateur radio and where radio Amateurs have an opportunity to receive training from representatives of various served agencies as well as sessions on technical EMCOMM-related issues. One of the first symposiums of this kind occurred in the late 1980's. The Emergency Response Instutute (ERI) was first sponsored by the Santa Clara Valley Section of the ARRL and held in San Jose CA. Served agencies that participated in the first ERI include the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, California Department of Forestry and Santa Clara County. ERI became a yearly event that continued until the mid 1990's.

Western States Trail Foundation's, The Tevis Cup - 4-5 August 2012

The Western States Trail Ride, popularly called the Tevis Cup Ride, is the oldest modern day endurance ride, having been held annually since 1955. As such, it has been the inspiration and model for the most challenging endurance rides worldwide.

The Tevis Cup Ride follows much of the same trail as the Western States Endurance Run. Starting at Robie Point in Squaw Valley, California, it follows much of the Western States Trail ending in Auburn, California, totaling approximately 100 miles. The Western States trail ascends from the Squaw Valley floor (elevation 6,200 feet) to Emigrant Pass (elevation 8,750 feet), a climb of 2,550 vertical feet in the first 4½ miles. From the pass, following the original trails used by the gold and silver miners of the 1850's, participants climb another 15,540 feet and descending 22,970 feet before reaching Auburn.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Tevis Cup Ride. About 800 people participate each year on Ride Day – more than four per rider! For information on becoming a volunteer, please click on the below links.

The Western States Endurance Run, 39th Annual Run: 23-24 June 2012

The Western States Endurance Run, aka "Western States 100" or "WS100," is one of the oldest ultra trail events in the world and certainly one of the most challenging.

The Run is conducted along the Western States Trail starting at Squaw Valley, California, and ending in Auburn, California, a total of 100 miles. The trail ascends from the Squaw Valley floor (elevation 6,200 feet) to Emigrant Pass (elevation 8,750 feet), a climb of 2,550 vertical feet in the first 4½ miles. From the pass, following the original trails used by the gold and silver miners of the 1850's, runners travel west, climbing another 15,540 feet and descending 22,970 feet before reaching Auburn.

Approximately 1,500 dedicated volunteers help out at each Western States Endurance Run. They are truly the life-blood of the Run and will do everything possible to make your day a success. Many spend more hours out on the trail than do the runners themselves. For information on becoming a volunteer, please click on the below links.
